IN ABOUT A WEEK, JOHNS HOPKINS MAGAZINE will publish part of my documentary project on intercollegiate athletes at practice. For nine months, I photographed every Johns Hopkins University varsity sport, 22 teams and 14 sports in all. Took a soccer ball in the gut, a field hockey shot to the leg (goddam, that's the hardest ball in all of sports), witnessed a dodgeball game break out at wrestling practice, was cold a lot, hot once or twice, and emerged with all new respect for the skill of good sports photographers. I am not a sports photographer, not by any measure, but I did my best to capture the intensity of collegiate athletes. In addition to the photos in the print edition of the magazine, there will be online slideshows when the magazine comes out.
